Sardinia/Corsica overview
Monday 24 September – Friday 5 October 2012

Sardinia

Monday 24 September - We begin in the old city of Cagliari, book into the city’s best hotel overlooking the port in the middle of the old city with its winding streets and rows of palm trees. We’ll spend a couple of days exploring the old quarter, some great little shops, restaurants and cafes, the bustling San Benedetto market and have a cooking class with our guide and host in Sardinia, the very talented Pietro Porcu.

We’ll also join his family for a morning in his mother’s charming garden full of fruit trees and herbs to learn a little of the Sardinian way of life, we’ll also see how artisan bread makers create the famous pane Carasau – the delicious wafer-like bread of Sardinia. You’ll learn about pasta making, preserving and the delicious cheese, prosciutto and salame.

We’ll take you to some of the best restaurants in Sardinia – some justifiably famous, others “finds”, making sure you get to taste some of the best regional specialties...among them roast suckling pig, fregola with seafood, whole fresh fish, kid braised with fennel, handmade ravioli and some exceptional sweets.

In many places we will spend two nights at a time, so while we explore a good range of places in Sardinia and Corsica, its not at breakneck pace and we try and avoid early morning starts – its your holiday and we want you to savour the delights of each island. On both islands we stay at hotels with a ‘wow” factor – in their location, their range of facilities, their service and comfort.

Corsica

Get ready to be blown away by the scenery in both Corsica and Sardinia  - its truly breathtaking – some of the roads around the coastlines and up into the mountains are full of wonders and the beaches are world class. We’ll have a day on the water in the spectacular Golfo Di Orosei (google it and get excited!) and a day at a Corsican beach relaxing and watching the world go by…we have chosen the perfect time of year – warm and not too crowded – a good month before the hordes of European tourists descend.

Our journey is not all food related – we’ll explore Orgosolo in central Sardinia - the village of the murals, taste wine with the winemakers in a pretty vineyard in Corsica, explore ceramic shops and little galleries.

You’ll also experience one of the loveliest sea journeys and the most spectacular entrance to a city when we take the early evening ferry to Corsica ….we sail for just under an hour and as we approach the white cliffs with their many caves, the hidden entrance to the harbour appears and you sail in under the ramparts of the ancient walled city of Bonifacio perched on the cliffs.

In Corsica we again explore the best of the rustic and regional including spending a day in the mountains with a passionate producer of charcuterie who also grows most of the produce for his restaurant which has sweeping views of the forested valleys below; we’ll enjoy lunches by the water and a final night dinner in a beautiful restaurant featuring the best Corsican food  – this run by a fantastic mother and daughter team.
