First of all I'd like to congratulate my friend Ronni Khan on her Australia Day honour as Local hero of the year for her work with Ozharvest.  She is a dynamo who has got a really simple idea to gather momentum and fly - to make sure that unused food from caterers, restaurants, hotels and cafes is gathered up and distributed to those who need it.

I'm one of the ambassadors for OzHarvest and I've seen what a difference this food can make. Every charity is working on a shoestring and to have good quality food ready to serve to those who need it is a godsend. OzHarvest's yellow refrigerated vans are the means that links the haves with the have-nots and make sure the food arrives in good condition. It takes just a single dollar to put a good meal in front of someone.... And its amazing the effect that food has.

I MC'd a corporate charity function for OzHarvest late last year and was humbled and surprised by the message from a homeless man Ken who spoke on the night about the simple action of being served a meal on plate. He said it helped to give him back some dignity. Rather than a sandwich wrapped in plastic, here was meal, served hot and it was truly savoured. You never think of those small things but they matter when you have so little.

Its wonderful that the subject of homelessness and practical ways of helping people are on the agenda for this year.

Makes you feel like we are on the right path.

Broome Dreaming

Well I'm dreaming of Broome...we will be there in June with our new Gorgeous Girls and Pearls Safari...days of exploring and indulgence, some local highlights and some bits of pure girly fun. We've just seen the new Australian film Bran Nue Dae, set in Broome and full of exuberance and fun...and settings like the outdoor cinema Sun Pictures - where our group will see a special showing of Bran Nue Dae.

And those beaches....and local characters ...and the music....it was so good to hear my Broome friends the Pigram Brothers on the soundtrack. They have a song about going home to Broome - where the mangoes are ripe and the frangipani is in bloom and their mother's cooking. We filmed their mum Agnes cooking her fish soup and rice on the beach as the sun was setting - the ancient rocks turning orange and purple in the late afternoon light and the sea that extraordinary turquoise colour it gets up there. Here she was cooking the freshest fish in the world with oceans of grandchildren playing around her....what bliss...what a wonderful place....and we will be there soon. Margaret River

Another jewel of a safari that is filled with wonders...exceptional food from this beautiful area where the vineyards kiss the surf. Our friend, Western Australian chef Don Hancey is ready to show you the delights of this part of Australia with a whole swag of money can't buy experiences. Italian feast at Ormeggio Restaurant at The Spit. on Saturday 6th March...complete with french bubbles, wine tasting with one of our friends from Wine Selector, cooking demonstration from chef Alessandro Pavoni ...and lunch ...on the waterfront...divine.....

Sri Lankan feast at Flying Fish on Saturday 20th March..complete with French bubbles, wine tasting with one of our friends from Wine Selector, cooking demonstration from chef Peter Kuruvita and exceptional lunch. This will be fun, informative and incredibly delicious!

Italian Food Safari

Did I tell you I fell in love over the summer? My taste-buds totally seduced by the exceptional skills of Umbrian food goddess Patrizia Simone in Victoria's Alpine country. I spent a whole day with Patrizia, visiting all the specialists who grow for her restaurant.  Its interesting that what is now being upheld as the way we need to live and eat - the slow food movement, the low food miles of food - all this is what Patrizia has been doing for the last 25 years.

On our new Italian safari to Victoria's High Country, we will spend a whole day with Patrizia and her growers, with lunch beside a beautiful stream - this is one of the al fresco tables that will feature in your list of Top 10 Meals of your Life.
