Our very first lunch of the year at Kushiyaki Azuma fulfilled a long-held dream of mine - to be able to open up the world of Japanese food as part of a safari. It was wonderful to have a guided tasting through some of the main Japanese flavours...and for each bite that day to be something that an artist had created.  Our event was held in Regents Place, tucked behind George Street and a little precinct that is a mini Japan, a few cute Japanese fashion and cosmetics shops plus Mr Azuma's Kushiyaki restaurant, a noodle bar and even a sweets shop - tworth popping to try frozen yoghurt in either green tea or vanilla flavours. And of course the restaurant is marvellous!

We were joined by 3 food bloggers who have there beautiful pictures and stories up on their blogs:

Sherrie Erlich's Australia Day.

How much do I love this feedback - it makes my heart sing to know people like Sherrie  love our safaris and put the delicious results to good use! Read this lovely email

She writes: Hi Maeve,

Just had to tell you what a great influence you have been on me. Late last year my husband and I accompanied your bus on the Middle Eastern tour.

We probably had the most shopping bags on the bus that day, I think I mentioned  we were off to our daughter's the next day.

You may have found the breakfast pizzas which probably slid to  the back of the bus ,as they were hot so I placed them on the floor and thats where they stayed.

We shopped that much that I decided to do something special and share all the food and experience with our friends.   So we invited 40 of our friend  over on Australia Day and told them it was just a casual finger food lunch.

You should have seen their faces when they saw the table, rose and nut lamb mini sausages, lamp Chirico from the butcher in Punchbowl, Lebanese breads from the baker, Chinese chicken mini drumsticks, Vietnamese spring rolls (shown how to make these from my Viet students, mini deli rolls, the best Sushi from Leura Hanna, and all the different coated nuts, olives and cheeses from the Nut Roaster etc etc.

The dessert table was decorated with my first effort of carving flowers into a watermelon,  a basket that I calved into a honeydew, which I filled with glace fruits from the Nut Roaster and other fresh fruits.  A German Suchur cake, and cheesecake from our German baker in Wentworth Falls (Swartzes).  Some Vietnamese traditional biscuits  delivered by one of our students.  More biscuits from 5 Star, and the most spectacular Japanese ice cream (again from one of our Korean students).  This ice cream is delicious and highly decorative, comes in a box with about 6.  Each the size of a bread roll,  I am sure you have come across it but it was a great surprise for me.

I hired a local musician who played the long neck lute, Turkish and medieval music.  I think people just loved the presentation of the food and the carving of the fruit of which I picked up from all the hotels on a recent trip to Turkey. As I watched my guests as they explored the table, it was quite a treat to watch even the most conservative and elderly dipping into the unknown.  It is two weeks ago and I am still receiving cards of thanks.   So I wish to pass this special thank you to all you do as this was a very intimate special day for me.

Regards,

Sherrie and Stephen Ehrlich

Those of you who have attended our safaris will know just how special our many guides are and how absolutely crucial to the success of the day. When we all get together we are the United Nations - a loud and boisterous group who were born right across the world and who share a common love of food. Its also great to sit down (doesn't happen often!) with one of our guides and get an update on their lives, the safari and how its going and some great ideas for the future.

I was lucky enough to catch up with our Turkish guide Serap Unsal for coffee last weekend. She has just taken a break from fulltime work running a food business to take care of her parents who are needing more care. Luckily she said, all their appointments are during the weekdays so the weekend is free for our Turkish Gourmet Safari. "I just love the safaris," she says. "I love meeting the people and showing them our food!". And she's good at it too - one of my favourite new tastes was introduced to me by Serap. "Try this - I call it Turkish vegemite, put it on my toast in the morning!' Its a lovely dense capsicum based condiment..I'm sure its great on toast but I love it on sandwiches with cheese..and its also useful as a marinade when mixed with yoghurt.

You can meet Serap on both our Turkish and Spice Safaris.

Food Safari: Glorious Adventures Across a World of Cuisines

Finally, after its 2nd reprint, the beloved recipe book is back in the bookstores. We have some copies at the office which we will bring on some safaris if you'd like to pick up a copy.  It was wonderful to meet all the fans of the show when I travelled around Australia with the launch...
